The beta has no license, trial or keychain entries. It goes online only about once a day, to download a small file from this website (version-beta.json) that lists the latest beta, and when you click Install Update, to download that beta. Neither request carries identifiers of yours. The parts below about license keys and Dodo Payments apply to Unstare 1.0.
What stays on your Mac
Your settings and your break history are stored only on your Mac and are never uploaded. Your license key is kept in your Mac’s keychain, with a copy in Unstare’s settings on your Mac, and is only ever sent to Dodo Payments, as described below. Delete the app and its settings, and your settings and history are gone. Your license and trial date stay in your keychain so a reinstall picks them up; to remove them, search Keychain Access for Unstare.
Microphone, camera and screen
Unstare does not ask for microphone, camera or screen-recording permission, and it can’t record anything.
- To hold breaks during calls, it asks macOS a yes-or-no question: is the microphone or camera in use right now?
- To hold breaks during full-screen video and presentations, it checks whether the app in front is full screen. It never reads what’s on your screen.
When Unstare goes online
Only for these things:
- Activating your license. Unstare sends your license key and a label for this Mac to Dodo Payments, our payment provider. The label is the Mac’s model code plus a random tag, like “Mac16,7 · 4F2A”, never your Mac’s name. That confirms the key is valid, counts how many Macs use it (up to 3), and lets you tell your Macs apart if you move the license.
- Re-checking your license. About once a week, Unstare sends the license key and a random ID that Dodo Payments created for this Mac at activation, to confirm the license is still valid. Deactivating a Mac sends the same two things.
- Checking for updates. About once a day, Unstare downloads a small file from unstare.pages.dev that lists the latest version. The request carries no identifiers of yours.
- Installing an update. Only when you click Install Update, Unstare downloads the new version from unstare.pages.dev. That request carries no identifiers of yours either.
There are no analytics, no crash-report uploads, no ads and no third-party SDKs that track you.
Buying a license
Purchases are handled by Dodo Payments as the merchant of record. At checkout they collect what a payment needs: your name, email address, card or other payment details and billing address. They process the payment, take care of sales tax and VAT, and email your receipt and license key. We receive the order details we need to deliver your license and help you if something goes wrong: your name, email address, country and what you bought. We never see your full card details. See Dodo Payments’ privacy policy.
This website
unstare.pages.dev uses no cookies, no analytics and no third-party scripts or fonts. The only thing it sends anywhere is the waitlist form, and only when you submit it. Like any website, our host may keep standard server logs (IP address, time, page requested) for a short time to keep the site secure and running. We don’t use them to identify you.
After checkout, Dodo Payments sends you to a page on this website with your license key and email address in its link. Like any page request, that link reaches our host, Cloudflare, and may appear in its short-lived server logs, which we don’t use. The page shows the key only in your browser, sends it nowhere else, and removes it from the address bar right away, so it stays out of your browser history.
The beta waitlist
If you join the waitlist on this website, we store:
- your email address;
- how you heard about Unstare, if you choose to tell us;
- your browser’s preferred language, so we can write to you in it;
- the country your request came from, as our host Cloudflare reports it (not your IP address);
- and the time you joined.
The list is stored in Cloudflare KV, a database run by Cloudflare, Inc., which hosts this website. We use it only to tell you when Unstare 1.0 launches, to send your launch discount, and to announce major updates. We never sell it or give it to anyone to market to you.
To stop scripts from flooding the list, the IP address a sign-up comes from is kept for one minute, then deleted automatically. It is never stored with your entry.
Want to be removed? Write to sunnatilloruzmetov001@gmail.com from the address you signed up with, and we’ll delete your entry. Otherwise we keep it until we stop sending launch news.
If you write to sunnatilloruzmetov001@gmail.com, we use your email only to answer you.
Changes and contact
